#SOTD: 새소년 - 긴 꿈 / Se So Neon - A Long Dream 💫 - After a thrilling debut in 2017, this alt rock band announced their last concert in December 2018 as the two male members had to go for their military service. The vocalist & guitarist @sleeep__sheeep went solo, until early this summer two new members joined to restart the band. - The title song that put them on the radar, “긴 꿈” also made everyone fall in love with So Yoon’s husky voice. When Steph reached out to me about this project, I was excited. I love the idea of using apparel as starting points to tell stories. Clothing and accessories hold abundance of experiences that we often forget or remain oblivious to, as they travel through multiple lives, times and lands. It astounds me what stories my mom’s scarf holds and how I will never know them, while I’m also giving it more stories. Steph and Izzy have been working hard for the past months, interviewing, photographing & now editing and prepping for the exhibition. They met with ten young folks around the GTA who have kindly shared their journeys, memories and histories—each person’s narrative so unique and so important. I’m delighted to support these two wonderful women in creating this project, which we hope to be the beginning of a dynamic cultural preservation. - “Wear We Came From” exhibition runs from September 5-14 @crimsonteas. a july moment // last tuesday. a very full and happy evening, thanks to the loveliest @tigerbalme who shared their beautiful voices, lyrics & melodies. their music is always a delicious treat. the evening also involved a park with a friend who unexpectedly visited, and yummy pho & rolls. what a summer tuesday if only i had a blessing of ice cream.
I started “Creator to Creator” in 2017 as part of @projectx40c’s blog. Featuring Asian artists working in Canada, the series asks them to share their artistic practice and write/draw about an Asian artist who works in a different medium as them. The goal is to introduce the wonderful talented folks in our community, who are ultimately those that I personally admire and curious about their work; as well as highlight the ongoing exchange happening between disciplines/genres/medium. - I’ve re-launched the series this spring, and while it’s still running, I’ll be sharing favourite lines from interviews with some of the artists I’ve previously featured. Sharing the photo that’s been my profile photo for awhile. I connected with @hanloveyoon last fall for her “Hyphenated” project, an ongoing portrait series which explores what it means to be a Korean hyphenated person. Despite my awkwardness in front of the camera, she eased me through the process and took this only photo that I like of myself. - The hyphen never felt comfortable for me or a part of me. The “Canadian” part came to me because it seemed like the only better solution at the time. The “Korean-Canadian” experience has so many multiplicities & nuances, and so I’m excited about this project which tries to challenge the “hyphen”. - In the NPR article, Hannah talks about the concept of ‘han’ and how “it translates to a collective sorrow, angst and pain”. I’ve been thinking a lot about this word that cannot fully be described or expressed in English. It continues to ring resonance as post-war/imperialism sentiments persist. I’ve been thinking about ‘han’ of ‘hanguk’, and, although a different hanja, I realized the coincidence(?) of the sameness of writing and sound seems to make ‘han’ an inevitable experience we must endure and grow stronger from.
