#hotdocs micro-review: The Book Of The Sea // execution 👌👌👌👌 // i actually love the storytelling structure of this documentary; it’s a simple concept but effective. The animation was painstaking and breathtaking, woven with so much care into the footage of Chutkotka hunters searching for food to feed their community. i thought a lot about the bodied relationship with sustenance these people had, and how those memories and experiences live in mythology - the pulse of a people from generation to generation. ♥️ i was reminded of how much i love storytelling and myth. how precious stories are to humanity, and how they can tell us a lot about right relations that are being forgotten over time, but also always asking if we can imagine beyond what we already expect.

#hotdocs micro-review: N Scott Momaday: Words From A Bear // everything 👌👌👌👌👌 // House Made of Dawn was the first Indigenous book I read and part of my first encounter with the world of postcolonial lit / nonwhite lit in English so I am always tender toward it. This doc was powerful, emotional and creative at all levels, choosing to fully center Momaday and his voice, interweaving story with photos, animation, testimony and commentary together to really offer a picture of the Kiowa writer that is powerful and vibrant, poignant and reflective. It’s what a literary doc should be. Directed by Kiowa director Jeffrey Palmer, this is a love letter from one Kiowa to another, and I was pretty teary that I got to watch such a power to power piece of art 😌😌

#hotdocs micro-review: The Miracle of The Little Prince // premise 👌👌 content essence 👌👌 execution 👎 👎 // I was v emotional at parts of the film but tbh I think the film worked against me. My attachment came from my familiarity with the literature, my own engaged understanding of colonial histories and the death / endangering of languages / respect for translators fighting to save and revitalize indigenous languages. But Boonstra’s beats were monotonous. The shots were long and tedious - although I feel they were going for deep and stirring - and the voiceover readings didn’t match the montages well. A bit of a waste of what could have been an amazing documentary.

i feel like a lot happened last month. i decided to aim towards what could be the next major step of my life. i felt an immense frustration about my current state, just because of strangers who decided to make unnecessary rules. i really felt how dangerous my mind is when left alone and how my emotions falter against lack of self belief. without the listening ears and support from my friends, colleagues, my dad and justin, i don’t know how i would have survived my birthday month. #AprilBBs and abby’s words definitely kept me together with reminders. 5월은 편하게 해주겠지. 어제가 있어서 오늘이 있으니깐. (photo of a very delicious cake that was my cake for an entire week)
#AprilBBs was a journey. a month long journey of reflection. answering the questions @ayebbey and i had put together didn’t seem hard. these are things that have been living in my head for awhile, i just had to translate them into english (bc i naturally use korean to speak the subtlety) and into visuals. but knowing these feelings and worries that are bundled inside me will be shared publicly, i had many moments of pauses. throughout this process, i learned how much abby and i shared similar thoughts and concerns, and that so many others also related. thank you for following us on our visual existential conversation, april’s been a ride of a month 💛 and thank you my fellow april bb for existing in my life (photo by @teytaarik)
