Between RA festival season and Indiegogo frenergy, I’ve been looking for the caesuras. ☺️
Overshare jasmine 1/3: LooseLeaf Magazine has been a staple at P40 for the last 4 years. The production schedule and launch events have always been anchors in my year: 2 months open subs, 2 months edit and format, 2 week print turnaround, launch. Rest 1.5 months. Repeat. They are always the most well-attended and well-documented of our events, maybe because so much of the community is inevitably connected to this humble, imperfect but earnest publication. We’ve now published over 100 pan-asian creatives and had the rowdiest launches in all kinds of venues, vended with so many people, and hosted musicians, performers, and filmmakers. From vol 1 wtf-how-is-this-real launch jasmine to vol 7&8 uncontrollable-cry-my-heart-is-full launch jasmine ☺️😂, i’m often just speechless at what she’s been given. #SOTD: 새소년 - 긴 꿈 / Se So Neon - A Long Dream 💫 - After a thrilling debut in 2017, this alt rock band announced their last concert in December 2018 as the two male members had to go for their military service. The vocalist & guitarist @sleeep__sheeep went solo, until early this summer two new members joined to restart the band. - The title song that put them on the radar, “긴 꿈” also made everyone fall in love with So Yoon’s husky voice. When I met up with @jaziimun on the summer of 2016 over bubble tea (of course), I had no idea what I was signing up for, let alone what community arts meant. Being overly awkward and presenting an overly enthusiastic persona on @projectx40c social media, I began to slowly open up as I met, talked, and listened to numerous artists, creators, creatives, art enthusiasts and supporters of all kinds. (More to come in two months.) - The space that @projectx40c has created has been incredibly important for me — a community where I felt welcomed, and hopefully where many other folks also feel welcomed — where they feel like their stories and art can be shared and heard. - We are in the second half of our final year — the Inheritance Year. Recently the PC government cut arts funding, and like many folks, we have been left with no significant funding. the arrival of the sweater weather means the time is nearing rather fast. it’s been living inside me for awhile and i’ve slowly been sharing to a close few. but with a little more than two months left, i guess i really need to tell myself it’s happening. i’m moving to singapore this december to pursue my masters and challenge a new life. i’ve been wanting to escape and branch myself to asia. the stillness and familiarity i feel towards this city had begun to make me anxious. 언제부턴가 이 도시에 안정감이 생기며 답답해지고 불안해졌다. 아직 젊은데 하고싶은것도 많은데 여기에 계속 머무르면 어디에도 못 갈거 같은 마음이 들었다. the process since getting accepted has been nerve-racking and heart trembling, and filled with lots of worrying. (my heart also flutters at the idea that my family who i have been an ocean away for seventeen years, will only be a day ride from toronto to vancouver.) i can’t thank jasmine, abby, jing, justin and gihee enough, and will definitely be due much more gratitude once december comes. the sweater weather also means a hectic theatre festival season and actually having to accomplish the list of things to do. 내가 향하는 목표가 너무나도 설레고 믿기지가 않아서 벌써부터 모든 의욕이 사라지고 나의 마음은 여길 떠나고 있다. 그래도 후회없이 여기에서 남은 바쁜 두 달을 열심히 해내야 된다는 마음 가짐으로 달리고 있다. - photo by abby from our trip to singapore last year, which was part of the catalyst to this decision.

When Steph reached out to me about this project, I was excited. I love the idea of using apparel as starting points to tell stories. Clothing and accessories hold abundance of experiences that we often forget or remain oblivious to, as they travel through multiple lives, times and lands. It astounds me what stories my mom’s scarf holds and how I will never know them, while I’m also giving it more stories. Steph and Izzy have been working hard for the past months, interviewing, photographing & now editing and prepping for the exhibition. They met with ten young folks around the GTA who have kindly shared their journeys, memories and histories—each person’s narrative so unique and so important. I’m delighted to support these two wonderful women in creating this project, which we hope to be the beginning of a dynamic cultural preservation. - “Wear We Came From” exhibition runs from September 5-14 @crimsonteas.
